Animal activists already petitioning Vilsack

The former Iowa governor hasn’t even been approved yet, but there’s already more than 100 animal activist groups urging the Agriculture Secretary to halt mass killing of  bears, cougars, coyotes, prarire dogs and wolves  on the grounds that the federal “lethal control” is cruel and unnecessary.

Archers can now hunt bucks until Jan. 15

           Late season archery hunters have until Jan. 15 to hunt deer, and new this season is an opportunity to harvest an antlered deer Jan. 1-15, a period that previously limited hunters to antlerless deer hunting only.

Trout angling offers cure for cabin fever

           Despite some especially cold days during December that brought single digit temperatures to parts of the state, Oklahoma also has been experiencing periods of unseasonably warm weather, driving sportsmen to break their cabin fever and head for the outdoors. Trout angling at one of Oklahoma’s eight designated trout waters may be just the cure for too much time spent inside.

New office to help Ag Secretary develop market-based approaches

Secretary of Agriculture Ed Schafer has announced the intention to create a new office to assist the Secretary of Agriculture in developing new technical guidelines and science-based methods for assessing environmental service benefits. The Ecosystem Services and Markets will work in conjunction with the Conservation and Land Management Environmental Services Board on these issues.

How to keep birds close in winter for your enjoyment

With winter upon us, this is a great time to examine our bird seed and feeders. On our winter birds website, we share our insights on the types of food preferred by the birds that commonly visit Oklahoma backyards during the winter, as well as their feeding behaviors. In a nutshell, two seeds really stand out for attracting a wide range of winter birds that use hanging or pole-mounted feeders; these are the black oil sunflower and thistle seeds.  The seeds that stand out for attracting ground-feeding birds such as doves and juncos are, again, the black oil sunflower and the proso millet.
