Wow! What a week for weather here in the Panhandle and we’re only halfway through it! Right now, we’re looking at low clouds and areas of patchy freezing fog across the Oklahoma Panhandle from Guymon eastward to Beaver.

Slightly warmer temps ahead

The mercury failed to fall as much as predicted overnight – it never made it below 11 degrees – so the wind chill advisory was cancelled at 4 a.m. Mind you it is still cold and there is still wind — just not as cold and windy as expected.

Arctic cold will linger a while longer

The mercury has made it to 13 degrees at about 4 p.m. and our overnight low is supposed to stop at 11. But, this is the Oklahoma Panhandle, so there are wind chills to factor in. In fact, the National Weather Service in Amarillo has issued a wind chill advisory from 6 p.m. this evening through 9 a.m. Tuesday.

Arctic blast plans extended stay

The Panhandle has had its high temperature today and it’s all downhill from here, folks. The National Weather Service in Amarillo expects our temperature to be around 16 degrees by 4 p.m. as a strong Arctic cold front sweeps across the Panhandles today leaving the possibility of  light snow and freezing drizzle in its wake.

Ole Man Winter back so soon?

The forecasters from the National Weather Service in Amarillo have issued a special weather statement to warn us that winter could to return to the area as soon as Sunday when an Arctic cold front is expected to sweep across the Panhandles bringing much colder weather for the start of the week.

BRRRRR! Cold now, warming later

Once the blowing slowed Tuesday afternoon, the melting started. Main roads were clear and dry but side roads were often slushy — and that slush is now ice! Be careful out there!

Winter weather advisory until 6 p.m.

Roadways are slick out there this morning and visibility is just a couple of blocks due to blowing snow.

Hwy 54 was in better shape than Hwy 64, probably due to truck traffic. Be careful out there, if you must go out.

Afrer an unseasonably warm high of 65 today, the winds are expected to blow the first winter storm of the season into the Panhandles, according to the National Weather Service in Amarillo.

Will snow arrive Monday night?

The National Weather Service in Amarillo thinks winter weather will make it to the Panhandles on Monday night and Tuesday in the form of light snow and blowing snow, spreading from northwest to southeast across the Panhandles starting Monday night. The most favored time for snowfall should be late Monday night through Tuesday morning.

A wind advisory is in effect from 9 am this morning to 6 PM CST this afternoon as sustained winds of  25 to 35 and gusts to 50 are possible by afternoon.

A high wind watch — with sustained north to northwest winds of 30 to 40 mph and gusts to 55 mph — is in effect from Sunday morning through Sunday afternoon for the central and eastern portions of the Panhandles.

Thanksgiving may bring moisture: rain or snow

Winter weather is possible for our Thanksgiving holiday, according to the National Weather Service out of Amarillo. That long dry spell that has covered the Panhandles may get a little relief from an upper-level storm system now affecting the southwestern United States.
