BEAVER – The town of Beaver, Okla., is proud of its undisputed title: Cow Chip Throwing Capital of the World. That’s right, every year the town gears up for a weeklong series of fun leading up to the World Championship Cow Chip Throw the third Saturday in April. Participants from far and wide line up to get their T-shirts proclaiming them a cow chip throw participant and then prove their prowess at flinging cow dung.
This year’s celebration is April 11 – 19, with the throw being held on April 18. The week kicks off with a Chili Cook-off, a Poker Run, a Vendor Viewing Craft Show and an Open House at the Jones and Plummer Trail Museum on Saturday, April 11. Mid-week, there’s an old-fashioned church service and a reception for the Grand Marshal and Pioneer Queen.
Savvy shoppers will enjoy the special sales that merchants citywide are offering at various times during the celebration. They will also appreciate the hobby and craft show April 17 – 18. This is a must-see event, with vendors from across the region. Also on Friday and Saturday, The Heartland Express band will provide live bluegrass music.
Before the throw on Saturday, everyone turns out for the parade through downtown, which includes a special appearance by the ‘Big Beaver.’ Following the throw on Saturday, cowhands will show their stuff in a team roping contest. Throwers and spectators alike can enjoy fresh barbecue available from local vendors before going to the throw. Be sure to stick around after the throw for the Cow Chip Golf Tournament on Sunday, April 19.
As the date approaches, more events are being confirmed. The Beaver County Chamber of Commerce Web site will have the latest details.
