Alva, Okla. — It was another winning weekend at Northwestern Oklahoma State University in Alva, Oklahoma this past Thursday, Friday and Saturday as the OPSU Aggie rodeo team traveled to the eastern corner of the state. The chilly weather didn’t affect the men’s and women’s teams performances as both rode their way to victory in the All-Around and team standings.
The men kick-started their weekend in the roughstock events, as two OPSU men made their way back to the short go in the bareback riding. Both Seth Hardwick and Quirt McDaniel covered their horses and earned themselves a spot in Saturday night’s performance with scores of 78 and 75 points respectively. Hardwick covered his second horse of the weekend and earned a 68 point score, tying him for third place in the average.
As for the bronc riding, the men were out in full force bringing back four Aggies to the short round. Troy Crowser led the way with an 80 point ride, with Seth Schafer close behind, bringing in a score of 78 points. Sophomore Tyrel Larsen rode for 73 points while Townsend Prince came in close behind with a 68 point score. In the short round, Crowser showed up on top of the pack again with a 72 point ride, followed by Schafer with a 71 and Prince with an even 70. These rides placed the men first, second and third in the aggregate scoring.
Chris Wagner was the lone Aggie to return to the short go in the bull riding, but after a 72 point ride in the long round, he was unable to follow through and was bucked off of his final bull.
At the timed event end of the arena, the men didn’t disappoint there either. Wyoming native Seth Schafer returned to the Ranger Arena in both the calf roping and steer wrestling, showcasing his all-around talents once again. With two runs of 9.2 and 9.5 seconds in the calf roping, Schafer placed sixth in the average. In the steer wrestling, Shafer made two excellent runs as well, but was out of the running following a barrier infraction. Tyrell Ouellette and Jesse Jolly were two others who returned to the arena on Saturday night in that event, bringing in times of 3.6 and 4.0 seconds. Although Ouellette had some tough luck in the short round, Jolly was able to capitalize on his position, bringing in another score of 4.2 seconds. This placed Jolly second on the night and first in the average. But Jolly didn’t stop there. In the team roping competition he and partner Tyler Lauridsen turned in a solid time of 6.7 seconds placing them second in the long go. After another run of 6.4 seconds, the pair ended the weekend second place in the average.
On the women’s side of things, Jordan Muncy was the lone Aggie to make it back in the barrel racing and the breakaway roping. With times of 2.8 and 2.7 seconds, Jordan took second in the average in the breakaway and first in the barrels with times of 13.29 and 13.21 seconds.
In the goat tying, OPSU saw four women back to the short round. Muncy won the round with a 6.1 second run, Shancee Howell sat in fourth position with a 6.7, Becky White returned seventh with a 7.2, and Chancy Harrington tenth with a 7.3. After the final tally, Muncy placed first in the average, while Howell and Harrington came in fifth and sixth. Having an incredible weekend, Jordan Muncy clinched the All-Around title for the women, and Jesse Jolly brought it home for the men.
The Rodeo team now takes a break from competition until February when they are set to compete at Kansas State University in Manhattan. With the men first in the Region and the women second, it looks to be another successful season ahead.
