Cold (read freezing) weather likely soon

By cold, I mean the first widespread freeze of the season may be upon us as soon as Wednesday night and Thursday morning, according to the National Weather Service in Amarillo.

A very strong cold front should push through here tonight, bringing cold Canadian air behind it. Highs on Wednesday may top out in the low 50s combined with winds gusting to 35 to 40 mph spell wind chills near freezing during the day. When the winds subside overnight, we get the mercury plunging into the upper 20s.

Ditto all of that for Thursday and Thursday night with cold temps lingering into Friday morning before a warming trend begins during the day Friday with a high forecast back into the 60s.

In the meantime, we’re looking at 70 percent chance of rain and thunderstorms today dropping to 30 percent tonight as the cold front pushes through.

At least it comes on the heels of a gorgeous weekend full of Chamber-of-Commerce type weather.
