Goodwell, Okla. — The Oklahoma Panhandle State volleyball team represented their school and their program very well with a strong showing in the Coca-Cola Classic tournament held over the weekend hosted by Wayland Baptist University in Plainview, Texas. The Lady Aggies posted a 2-2 record and advanced to the tournament’s final game.

The two Lady Aggie wins were both 3-0 victories, one over Sul Ross State and the other over Huston-Tillotson. In addition, they lost a 3-0 decision to Lubbock Christian and fell 3-1 to Wayland Baptist in a hotly contested final match. OPSU head coach J.P. Winn was especially pleased with the Lady Aggie effort against the talented Wayland Baptist team. Wayland Baptist had not given up a single set prior to the OPSU match.

Winn had special praise for Heather Helton, Cheryl Coldwell, Krisha Roach and Meredith Powell.

Helton (a senior from Bowie, Texas) was the only Lady Aggie named to the All-Tournament team. In the match with Sul Ross State, Helton had 10kills, five defensive digs and a very solid .471 hitting percentage.

Coldwell (a junior from Norman, Oklahoma) came up big in the Wayland Baptist match with 41 assists, 15 digs, two assisted blocks and three kills.

Roach (a junior from Lubbock, Texas) also performed well in the Wayland Baptist matchup with 10 kills, a block, and three block assists.

Powell (a sophomore from Alvin, Texas) did a nice job in the Lubbock Christian match with six kills, four digs and a block assist.

The Lady Aggies are gearing up for their own tournament, the six-team No Man’s Land Classic, set for this coming Friday and Saturday in Oscar Williams Fieldhouse on the OPSU campus.

Both spirits and anticipation are high concerning an exciting volleyball season at OPSU.
