Hwy 54 road work begins in earnest

The nightmare begins on Hwy 54. We have to keep telling ourselves it’s a good thing because the busy 4-lane highway is now restricted to two lanes and two cross streets — those with stoplights: 4th and East – are blocked off. Streets with stop signs remain open, so far — at least until the work crews reach this end of town. They started at the other end, out beyond 12th St.
“We’re expecting headaches,” stated Guymon Police Chief Eddie Adamson on radio station KGYN Monday morning. The repaving project — Adamson said he believed they were milling down 5 inches and replacing 3 inches — is expected to take about 30 days. That means our roadway should be nice and smooth in time for Halloween — not to mention the prime family gathering times shortly thereafter.
The chief added he thought the work was from Crumley to 12th St. However, I can tell you the headache, er, lane restriction extends beyond 12th. Be sure to give yourself extra time to get where you’re going and take alternate routes whenever you can.
“Avoid 54, if possible” was his closing encouraging comment.

i hope that everyone keeps using hwy 54, or all of our businesses will suffer. I just opened the shrimp shack in the old Le-ann’s restaurant, and i know that if everyone avoids 54 it will hurt my new business tremendously.
So use 54 but use caution as well.
