Farmer’s Market: Shop early & often

Satisified shopping at Guymon’s initial foray in the world of farmers’ markets means shopping early and often.

Not every vendor shows up every week — although most do. Some vegetables haven’t come in yet. And, sometimes — luckily for the rest of us — a vendor gets it into his/her head to try something new or different.

Such was the case last Saturday, Hardesty Cheese showed up — at long last — with plenty of sampling in case, like me, you can’t make up your mind. The thought of fresh Parmesan grated over pasta sent me to the store for some angel hair — and a grater. He promises to be back again before the market closes at the end of September.

Another new addition was farm fresh eggs, brought by the Women of Faith Ministries. Mostly it’s home-baked goods and mixes from these gals, but last week they also had eggs collected in the past three days and a handful or so each of a variety of produce — jalapenos, green peppers, cherry tomatoes, squash, cukes and zucchini, etc. These ladies are raising money to attend a conference in OKC.

In addition to her produce, Liz Lewis usually has some homemade crescent rolls and sweet lime pickles. Last week, she tried some cucumber salsa. Oh my, was that awesome stuff!

Admission is free for both vendors and buyers. All items have been grown or made by the vendor. The market is a joint effort by Main Street Guymon and the Business Enterprise Center. Contact Charles White at 338-6246 or Vicki Ayres-McCune at 338-5838 for more information or to sign up as a vendor.
