States Wilson Hamby, Jr., 87, of Texhoma passed away Monday evening, August 25, 2008 at the Prarie House Nursing Home in Plainview, Texas.
The son of States Wilson and Rose Malvy (Begley) Hamby, he was born February 6, 1921 in Texas County, Oklahoma near Guymon.
Mr. Hamby served his country in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. He served in the New Guinea Campaign and received the Asiatic Pacific Theater Medal with a Bronze Service Star, the Good Conduct Medal and the American Theater Medal. He was honorably discharged on November 2, 1945 at the rank of Sergeant.
Wilson and Edith Pauline Layman were united in marriage on January 11, 1945 in Vancouver, Washington. The family made their home in Texhoma, where Mr. Hamby worked in farming and ranching, as well as being a rural route carrier for the U.S. Postal Service for over 30 years. He was a charter member of the Grace Southern Baptist Church in Guymon where he served as a deacon.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Marvin Hamby.
Survivors include his loving wife of over 63 years, Edith Hamby; his daughter, Ruby Johnene Ross and her husband, Paul of Plainview, Texas; daughter-in-law, Margie Hamby of Jacksboro, Texas; his sister, Ruby Mauldin of Amarillo, Texas; five grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday morning, August 29th at 11:00 a.m. at the Grace Southern Baptist Church in Guymon with Rev. Tom Freeman officiating. Interment with military honors will follow in the Elmhurst Cemetery in Guymon.
The Hamby family request memorials be given to the Wayland Baptist University Kenya Special Gifts. Memorials will be accepted at the Bunch - Roberts Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1112, Guymon, Oklahoma 73942.

So sorry to learn of Mr. Hamby’s passing. I know that his legacy will live on through memorial gifts to the Kenya Project at Wayland Baptist University. His legacy also lives through his daughter, Johnene. I knew his son, Marvin, who was an outstanding artist.
God bless the family in this time of loss.
